Comments: I first found out about John Stewart in 1959 when I was interested in rock n roll and folk music. I purchased an LP The Cumberland Trio in which John was the singer songwriter. Another member of the group was Gil Robbins - Tim Robbins dad he went on to another group The Highwaymen. I used to be able to get all JS's latest releases through Probe but since the ownership changed hands they no longer stock his records. The last CD,s I managed to get was a 3 box set featuring The Last Campaign, Folk Music and The Trio Years for £8.00!

Comments: Always enjoyed music of John Stewart. First heard him on Noel Edmond's Sunday morning show on radio in the seventies and from there my interest grew. Have many of his LPs, CDs and tapes. My wife isn't a fan so I regularly go into our other living room and really enjoy a John Stewart evening every now and again. Who needs TV when your ears can listen to his music !

Comments: WOW! This is very strange for me. Since 1970, JS's music has been in my soul. Until I reached this terrific site, I didn't even know you other fans were out there...let alone this site. My sense of belonging is overwhelming. But, I like to revel in my enjoyment of JS alone. So, this is difficult. Just through this site, I have learned so much more about JS's journey since 1970. I heard a few "newer" songs here, and still connect. Whoa! I didn't even know a Buffy existed. Should I stay with my vision of the "California Bloodlines" guy? Or, should I connect? Not sure. Let's see what happens. My Best, Tom

Comments: Thanks for a great site on one of my favorite performers. I'm a John Stewart fan from back when he was with the Kingston Trio. Saw them perform many times on the east coast in the 60s, and got to meet them backstage once. Haven't followed his recent career much, but do have 5 or 6 of his albums. I'm glad to hear he's still going strong. (And so is Bob Shane!)I found your site from a link from the Kingston Trio site. Regards...

Comments: I met John once back in the early 70s, when he appeared on Ian Tyson's Canadian television show in Toronto, and then Istarted buying albums, keeping an eye open for whatever was new. Now I've got a daughter who is starting a career as a professional musician, and I'll show her this site and let her read some of the interviews and learn more about what drives a real musician. She's an opera singer, but that's close enough. This afternoon I was listening to California Bloodlines on my computer's CD Rom drive, and thought I'd punch up John's name and see what I could find. I've now spent more time on this first visit to your site than any one visit to any site, ever. Thanks for going to all this trouble. I appreciate learning more about John. Brian A. Kilgore

Comments: I became a John Stewart fan when he did Sweetheart on Parade on the Ed Sullivan Show along with the Jamestown Flood. Where can I find these two songs? I even contacted the American Saddlebred people one time to find out if the story of the blind man and the great mare was true. Since I was a little kid I may have gotten it backwards, but there were a lot of Sweethearts after that song came out.

It was truly a magical time and I look forward to more of the same as tme goes by. I hope John is doing well and realizes that he has a huge following that still loves listening to his work. Comments: I first heard John's July Your a Woman in 1969 on Radio 1. Although this was certainly not my type of music at the time, I was 15 and into Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin etc I was taken by the single and when some 4 years later I came across California Bloodlines I remembered the single and thought Lets give the album a go. This was the start of one of my great Record/Cd collections and I now rate John as the finest living Songwriter.I was lucky enough to get hold of a copy of Sunstorm early on and from then on have collected all the albums up to the last year or so and I am just trying to mop those up ar the moment. I would love to get hold of the Swedish Blondes and several of the cassettes. I have seen John about 8 or 9 times live although I missed London recently having found out 2 Days after it sold out. Still now I have this Web address I will be better informed in the future. All the best for an excellent Web Site

Comments: This morning I did a search for my old folk singing icon, John Stewart. Well, I stumbled on your page. Your introduction to John's singing was much like mine, and about the same time. I had "The Phoenix Concerts" LP. I played it until it totally was worn out. The pickup line that he had for the hitchhiker, "We'll hell I was only going to the store for cigarettes, but I'll go to Seattle if you want" is golden. A few visits to see him at the old Palomino Club in Hollywood, and I was hooked. It is surprising how many people were hooked by that raspy but heartfelt voice. John's brief moment in the full commercial spotlight for the song "Gold" seemed a bit out of place for him. I went to see him in San Carlos and although, they were very tight, along with Chris the original "Rock", and the rest, there was something that just did not seem to fit. I think John is much more at home playing "one on one" in a smaller venue. If anyone knows where I can get that original Phoenix Concerts album, or any of the earlier works, I sure would like to have them again.

Must have caught his show three dozen times over the years. Even saw him a couple of years ago with the Trio in Santa Cruz. His voice has deteriorated a wee bit in the last few years but his talent still remains at the top. I miss his little red electric guitar though. He used to really rock with it and I haven't seen it lately. Keep rolling John ... you're the best!!!

Comments: Hello fellow JS fans! I was just having a discussion with my wife about the real (as opposed to hyped) benefits of the Net. One real benefit I proposed was the ability of super-talented niche artists (like my personal all time favorite)to publish their music and attract communities of fans. That said, I had to go test my idea. I hadn't imagined, though, to find a great Stewart site in the UK with messages from all over. Living in the US southwest, I was privileged to see John Stewart in concert nearly a dozen times. He frequently played small venues in Phoenix where I lived at the time. The Celebrity Theater was (and still is) a small hall holding about 3,000 and featuring a rotating stage. Stewart played there several times and I was there for most of them. There was another place called, I believe, the Red Dog Saloon which was a dinner club in Scottsdale. I remember being seated at a very private table under a stairwell, of all places! Hearing Stewart live is unbeatable - as The Phoenix Concerts attest. Those times will always be among my most treasured memories. I greatly enjoyed your site! I hope to stop back from time to time. Tom

Comments: As with you, I heard "July You're A Woman" on the way to Yosemite National Park in California in May of 1975, but did not get an opportunity to buy any albums until 1979 while stationed in Germany. As a Kingston Trio fan, I was acquainted with John and the many songs he wrote and sang with the Trio. Subsequently, I have purchased many of his albums (CDs now)and have been to two of his concerts in the states. Sadly the one which my wife and I attended in Long Beach, CA in 1988 was really not up to par and I was apprehensive when I got tickets for last night's (June 3) performance at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. Needless to say the concert was just outstanding. Nick Reynolds is just as ribald as ever and the evening ranks of one of the most pleasant which my wife and I have had. We have attended many of the Kingston Trio's concerts since our return to the states in 1983 and I guess with time all of us including our favorite performers have mellowed. We went to see the Kingston Trio in Laughlin, Nevada late November of 1999 and they were tremendous. It would be really great if the gods would let us all have a reunion tour of John and the Trio. Like you, I discovered him in mid-1970's with Noel Edmonds on Radio '1' playing a track from Cannons in The Rain everyday on week in 1974 I bought his album when I started work with Manchester City Council and it and all John's music has been a favourite. I have rediscovered Don Mclean of American Pie fame via the web and was just searching for more old favourites. Thanks for the mianderings they are really useful - I will return and look some more.

AND WENT INTO A FURTHER DEMINSION IN THE SONGS OF LITTLE RICHARD, JERRY LEE LEWIS, AND WENT ON PLAYING, NON-STOP. HIS PIANO PLAYING WAS FANTASTIC.AND AS I SAID BEFORE HE JUST KEPT GOING ON AND ON!

Comments: Been a fan of Johns sneaking in the Cellar with a fake ID so I could just hear him play. I even sold him some gear at the music store I worked at. I played in the Bay Area and always did some of John's songs at least the ones I could do justice to. Istill play (many years later) I am recording a disc of my orignals and adding soem of my other favorites like Kanas, Josie Kansas Rain. We get to see John at McCabes now and then. The last show was kind of sad as Buffy was not feeling well. Would love to see John with the original band Arnie, Dan Dougmore, Joey Harris. Lorene ect...... Thanks to one of the most under rated song writters of our lives Tom

I own most of his LP's In fact I hitchhiked to Boston to buy 'Cannons in the Rain.(about 100 miles) My favorite however is 'Signals Through The Glass' He autographed it for me the last time I saw him and I'm hoping to get Buffy to sign it too. The problem with the USA is it's too darn big and we live on opposite coasts. If I catch him every four or five years I'm doing well. I just started listening to CD's and I'm thrilled that so many of his records have been re-released. You've got a great website dedicated to a great man.

Thank goodness the CD era has made just about all of his stuff available again For me he is the best song writer about America in the last 50 years. But as most of his fans know he's much more than that. I have had the pleasure of seeing duo w/ dave and full group (even with Buffy), all totalled probably ten times. All have been memorable experiences and enjoyable evenings.

Comments: Having been a long-time fan of the Kingston Trio, naturally I became a John Stewart fan when he joined the group in 1961. I had the unique experience of seeing the Trio's final performances at the hungry i in San Francisco in 1967. A year later, when John Stewart and Buffy Ford performed at the club I was there again...every night, front row. What a rush! Of course I was only (age) 2 at the time! Unfortunately, John Stewart doesn't do many (any?) concerts in the Midwest but that doesn't stop me from buying every recording of his I can get my hands on. He's a pheonominal songwriter and performer and I look forward to a time when I can "catch him" in concert again.

Comments: A great site. I'm still getting to grips with the Net but will have a great time tracking JS. I bought "California Bloodlines" 30 years ago and have been hooked ever since. Finally got to see John at McCabe's in Santa Monica in December '98. Just happened to be in LA at the right time. Blew my socks off! And I got the chance to meet John and Buffy briefly. I've subscribed to The Finger for years but never managed to track Omaha Rainbow down. I just browsed a lengthy Spencer Leigh interview from that glorious tome – Spencer contributed to Blues & Soul which I ran for many years. I'm gonna be a busy dude catching up with all the JS info on the Net – greeeaaaat! Say a prayer for Buffy and John, y'all.

Comments: I first heard of John in Zigzag magazine (the original fanzine?). Then saw him in 1974 at Zigzag's fifth anniversary concert at the Roundhouse. I imagine that 'Mother Country' from your December collection comes from this gig. What a gig. John backed by Arnie Moore and Pete Thomas who was playing with Chilli Willi on the same bill. It seems that John arrived without a drummer but what a stand in. Does anyone hit the drums harder. Anyway Mr S played a belter. Even though I knew very few of the songs it was totally captivating. I had the same experience on seeing Lucinda Williams for the first time. My favourite memory is at the Mean Fidler seeing JS in, I think, 1984. I shouted out 'Bolinas' at a quiet moment as you do; it is one of my favourites; a few songs later Buffy Ford came on stage and sang it with John. A magical moment. Good luck with site it is great to have found it. Brian

Comments: I've been listening to J.S. from his first solo album ...First seen him in concert down in West Virginia during the Bomb's Away years He came out in an all white suit and opened the show for Jimmy Buffett. I try to get down to see his show whenever he's in town. One time I had to work and didn't get there till after the performance...John was still at the club and I happened to mention to him that I had wanted to see his show but had to work. He went to his bag and found a cassette and said he take this it's got tonight's whole show on it...How could you not like a guy like this?

Comments: John's words and music have been instilled in my soul for more than three decades. I enjoyed the Kinston Trio, but then they disappeared from the scene. In the early 70s, a friend and I went to the Starlight Bowl in Burbank (LA) and saw Emmy Lou Harris, Hoyt Axton, and John Stewart. It was the first time I'd seen him and was immediately hooked. As a California native, I absorb everything he sings about the San Joaquin Valley and other parts of the state. He expresses the feelings I've experienced. Live, forever!

Big oversight: As many times as I have visited and re-visited your informative and entertaining site, it just dawned on me that I have never "officially" signed your Guestbook. Fixing that right now! When new Bloodliners come aboard, I recommend the 3 best JS sites: Clack's, Roadman's and yours (in no special order). We need to put out a call for new mugs on the Rogue's Gallery. Sure wish Merle Stringfield would submit that great b/w shot that Howard took last May, from the CA Bloodlines cover.) Always a pleasure to drop in, courtesy of your Merseyside hospitality! A friend played "Mother Country" for me and it was an instant connection. Stewart plays the Palms Playhouse in Davis, CA. about twice a year. Venue holds about 150 people. He's almost 60 years old and could certainly lay back and perform all our favorites. But our favorites keep adding on because he continues to write more songs. And the older tunes always seem to have a new ring to them anyway, depending on the mood John's in. I could go on but enuf for now.

I've been fortunate to have seen many of JOHN'S LIVE CONCERTS in the LA and Orange County areas over the years including THE GOLDEN BEAR in my hometown of HB; and even in Buena Park at the old Japanese Deer Park, for free. Actually I did pay admission to the park for my children, John and Judy, ages 5 and 4, but that was for all the attractions and we had to wait 10 hours for the concert that evening.

Listened again a few months later and have been John's fan ever since. Went back and got California Bloodlines. I believe that Cal. B-lines was chosen by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest albums; surprising show of good taste. I travel to the UK a couple of times a year, as I do business with Lloyd's. It's nice to see there are Stewart fans there, and I get the feeling he has a bigger following in the UK than in the US (at least proportionately).

A friend backed him up on guitar for the week, and since I was a friend of a friend, we all had a chance to "hoist" back a few "Mexican coffees". I remember him to be a real down to earth guy. I still have a copy of California Bloodlines that he gave me to give to my girlfriend ( a wisp of a gal from Bath, England ). Unfortunately for her, she broke up with me before I had a chance to give it to her. I'd lost track of him since The Phoenix Concerts days. Good to know that he's still kicking. John has a way of taking a convetional sentiment so often expressed and tweaking to to get at the truth. His work with the Trio was fantastic producing some of the best songs they did. His voice added an edge that was needed and his solo work is amazing. I hope to discover more of his stuff. If anyone would like to help me on this journey to "Stewartville", please let me know. I'm looking for his more acoustis stuff.

"Mother Country" to "I Remember America" - what a great vision! I have been to England twice, and being a history major I thoroughly enjoyed my visits. Americans are fascinated with Great Britain as the English are of America. That probably helps explain why John is more popular over there. I know a lot of hard work went into your page, and people out here do appreciate it!

I got into him years ago - how many know that Noel Edmonds was a big fan and played lots of JS when he was a Sunday morning DJ on Radio One in late 1960's/early 70's. Coming to London in 76, I saw JS at the Venue in Victoria and later at the Mean Fiddler (where he signed my copy of Transcas). Since then, I play the odd album and look to see if he is playing live but only rarely see his name. Good stuff on the page !

Comments: This UK page is fantastic! No offense to Mr. S., but I like this page better. Your story of the evolution of a Stewart fan is fantastic. My story of becoming a KT fan is located in another page...somewhere. Like most US folks my age, I first came to know John through the big late 70's hits "Gold" and "Lost Her In The Sun." I hated "Gold" because I'm always rather annoyed at Stevie Nicks voice. But after I became a Trio fan in 1981 (at 17), I became familiar with ALL of John's works, not just the hits...I've been a fanatic ever since! Through your page I've learned I've got some catching up to do with CDs. Will we ever get the US mixes of BLONDES on CD with the Swedish bonus tracks included? I'm going to write to the Folk Era group and see how they feel about a BEST OF THE SECRET TAPES compilation CD that they could co-release with John. Any fans that wish to contact me, write Mark James Meli / 816 Atlantic Ave. #2 / Rochester New York 14609/ USA.

Comments: Linked over from another site. Old fan. Trio, 1961. Saw them later in college in Philadelphia with John. Knocked me out. Cellar Door in Los Altos in 74, while dating the wife. Bloodlines. Freight and Salvage, Berkely. Saw him last in 97 in Aptos CA. The collection of the music is complete save for a loose tape or two. Can't think of a musical friend who stayed with me as long and through the same changes.

Comments: I found you through Bloodlines and often log onto your site. I especially want to thank you for "I am the Star in the Bright Sky Shining." I have heard John Stewart sing this at Sweetwater in Mill Valley, CA twice, but this is the first chance I've had to listen to it without all the distractions of the people around me, etc. It is such a beautiful song. Thank you so much for making it available to us through your website. Sue K.

Comments: When my wife and I were going together (1963- ) we enjoyed the Mitchell Trio and Kingston Trio. When the trios broke up we expected John S.and John Denver to go on their on. I found John's first LP, Signals Through the Glass, in a Champaign record store near the U of I. We've been hooked ever since. With John Denver I had to order some of his early albums....the stores didn't have them. We've followed them through the years to John D's untimely death a year ago and John's album Rough Sketches. Does anyone know if John has health problems, etc. His voice is awful rough on Rough Sketches?

I'm familiar with John Stewart mostly through his work with the Kingston Trio and feel his solo career has been an extension of the Kingston Trio. This site is a good companion to the Kingston Trio Place web site that actually led me to this one. This site should not be missed by any Trio fan, particularly those who enjoyed them because of what John Stewart contributed.

By getting a couple of examples of his work on the net, and also sharing wonderful images of John Stewart with the world, I feel as though somehow now a circle has been completed that was left undone by his untimely death. I know that Pat would be very pleased, as I am. I just hope that other John Stewart fans are pleased, as well.

It always is fun to listen to that recording and drift back to 1974. :) No big deal but you need an "other" category to be filled in on your "how did you find us?" form. Comments: July, You're a Woman is one of my favorite songs and I had the fortune of seeing the Kingston Trio years ago in Cleveland, Ohio with John Stewart. The sixties enhanced my interest in folk music. I attended college in Kentucky where I learned to Travis pick. Now residing in Florida, I attend folk festivals in the Southeast and as far west as Colorado. I play a 12 string Yamaha FG-260 and play small bars and coffee houses in eastern and central Florida. By the way, you keep and excellent website!! Very Well done!!

Comments: I have been a fan for years, but always have had trouble finding his albums -- Bombs Away Dream Babies being the exception. I just happened to come across Airdream Believer last year, and it renewed my enthisiasm. At the office, I shared his comments on the liner notes with my colleagues -- they were superb. I was listening to the CD while I was surfing, so I decided to see what the net had on John Stewart. This was one of two great sites on John. I especially enjoyed reading and listening to the recent BBC interviews. Thanks for this opportunity to find out more about him. p.s. For years, I have wondered whether he was a runner. The beat of some of his songs (e.g. Let The Big Horse Run) ideal for my running.
